What Can and Can't Go Into Your Food Disposal

What Can and Can't Go Into Your Food Disposal

What Can and Can’t Go in Your NAMU NAMU Food Disposal

Let’s be honest—we all wish we could toss every little scrap into our Food Disposal and be done with it. But while NAMU NAMU is powerful and smart, even the best machines have limits. To keep your electric composter running smoothly and lasting longer, it's important to know what belongs inside (and what’s a big no-no).

✅ Things You Can put in  NAMU NAMU Food Disposal

Good news: the NAMU NAMU is designed to handle a wide variety of everyday food waste. Here’s what your Food Disposal loves to turn into plant-friendly gold:

  • 🍎 Fruit scraps – peels, cores, pits, pulp — even the stubborn citrus kinds

  • 🥕 Veggie scraps – raw or cooked, peelings, stalks, and wilted bits

  • 🥩 Meat – both raw and cooked (no bones, more on that below)

  • 🐟 Fish bones – as long as they’re small and soft

  • ☕ Coffee grounds & beans – used or unused, filters too (if biodegradable)

  • 🍵 Tea leaves – loose or in bags (just make sure bags aren’t plastic-based)

  • 🥚 Eggshells – crushed or whole, totally fine

  • 🍞 Bread, grains & cereal – cooked or stale, no problem

  • 🍲 Cooked leftovers – rice, pasta, stews, and small portions of meals

  • 🌿 Soft plant trimmings – leaves, herbs, flower petals

  • 🥜 Nut shells – only soft ones like peanuts, pistachios, or cashews

If it came from your kitchen and it’s not super tough or oily, there’s a good chance NAMU NAMU can handle it like a champ.

❌ Things You Should NOT Put In Your Food Disposal

While NAMU NAMU is a powerful tool, it's not indestructible. Certain materials can clog, damage, or even shorten the life of your machine. So please avoid the following:

  • 🌽 Tough, fibrous materials – corn husks, pineapple cores, bamboo shoot peels

These are too stringy and can jam or wrap around the blades.

  • 🍗 Fatty cuts of meat or skin – duck skin, pork belly scraps, etc.

High fat = greasy buildup = bad news for your composter’s inner workings.

  • 🦴 Hard bones and seafood shells – beef, pork, crab, lobster, etc.

They're too hard and may break the cutting tools or scratch the inner lining.

  • 🛢️ Hot or used cooking oils – don’t pour it in!

Oil can coat the interior and clog parts. Just... no.

  • 🍡 Super sticky foods – rice cakes, melted cheese globs, sticky desserts

These can clump up and make cleaning a nightmare.

  • 🧼 Non-kitchen waste – plastic, metal, rubber bands, twist ties, or packaging

Obvious, but we have to say it. Only food waste allowed!

  • 🥣 Soups and watery stews – excessive liquid isn’t ideal

Liquids don’t compost well and could overflow or mess with the sensors.

🛠️ Why It Matters

Putting the wrong things inside can lead to more than just a smelly mess. It could damage the blades, wear down the protective coating, or trigger error messages mid-cycle. Nobody wants that.

Think of NAMU NAMU like a high-performance kitchen assistant. It’s powerful, yes, but it still needs a little care and common sense to do its best work.

💡 Final Tips:

  • When in doubt, cut larger scraps into smaller pieces—it speeds up the process.

  • Avoid overloading your bin.

  • Keep your Food Disposal clean with regular filter checks and a wipe-down every few cycles.

Stay green 🌱
