When we first looked at how food waste is handled in Australia, one thing was clear: there was room for something better.
Across the country, more councils are rolling out food waste collection, encouraging households to separate scraps from general waste. It is an important step, and one we support. But there is a catch. Once scraps sit in a bin for days — sometimes weeks — before collection, they begin to smell, particularly through an Australian summer. Few things are less inviting than lifting the lid on a bin in the heat.
At the same time, many councils encourage managing food waste at home. Traditional methods like a backyard compost heap sound good in theory, but in practice they can feel messy and demanding — managing odour, turning the pile, getting the balance right. It is no wonder many well-meaning efforts quietly fall away.
That is where NAMU NAMU began.
Why NAMU NAMU
In Korean, namu (나무) means tree — a quiet symbol of life, renewal and steady strength. We chose it because trees work slowly and without fuss, improving their surroundings without asking for attention. That is the spirit we wanted: everyday sustainability, made effortless and considered.
Doubling it — NAMU NAMU — adds a sense of warmth and of multiplying effect. One small action at home can ripple outward.
Food waste, reimagined
We felt there had to be a better way to handle scraps — one that did not involve holding your breath over a bin or giving up a weekend to a pile in the yard.
Our answer is the FC50: a compact food waste disposal that dries and grinds kitchen scraps into a dry, lightweight material in a few hours, with no smell, no pests and no heavy lifting. It is made to sit comfortably in a modern kitchen rather than be hidden away — sustainable living that feels simple and unremarkable, in the best sense.
Caring for the planet should not feel like hard work. It should feel natural.
What we stand for
Sustainability. Everything we make starts from respect for the planet. By helping households keep food waste out of landfill, we aim to reduce the methane it would otherwise release — one kitchen at a time.
Simplicity. Sustainability should not be complicated. The FC50 is designed to be intuitive to use and easy to maintain, because the habits that last are the simple ones.
Design. A food waste solution does not need to be hidden. We made the FC50 as considered as it is functional — a calm, minimalist object that belongs on the bench.
Innovation. Technology should work in the planet's favour. Our system dries and reduces food waste quickly and cleanly, turning scraps into a lightweight material in hours rather than weeks.
Where we are headed
We picture a future where managing food waste at home is as ordinary as recycling — a simple, daily habit. Homes a little greener, bins a little cleaner, and sustainable living that feels achievable rather than effortful.
NAMU NAMU exists to bring that a step closer, one kitchen at a time. Because when sustainability feels easy, more people take part — and small daily actions add up to something larger.
