The FC50 Smart Food Waste Disposal, with the filters to keep it running. One carbon filter comes fitted in the unit; two spares are packed alongside it. Bought separately, the two refills come to around $60. At roughly six months per filter, that is around eighteen months of the cycle before you need to think about it again.

How it works
Scraps in at night. PlantMix by morning. A typical mixed load runs overnight, then the unit stops on its own — quiet, unattended, considered. Dry scraps can finish in around five hours; wetter loads simply take longer. PlantMix then matures in open soil over two to four weeks before it feeds the garden.
Made for the kitchen it lives in
There is no plumbing to install and nothing to plumb it into — the FC50 sits on the benchtop and plugs into a standard Australian power outlet. The low-vibration motor runs without drawing attention, and the carbon filter keeps odours in check through the cycle, so it is at home in an apartment kitchen as much as a family one. Set it going after dinner and let it work while the house sleeps.
Worth knowing
- Meat and fish without bones are fine. Bones, fruit pits and hard seeds, soups and liquid-heavy foods stay out — hard items strain the grinding mechanism.
- Each filter lasts around six months. Replacements are around $30 each, sold as a single, 2 pack or 4 pack. Spent filters go in general waste, not the garden.
- PlantMix is dried, ground food scraps — not finished compost, and not a fertiliser on its own.

Is the FC50 ready to use out of the box?
Yes. The FC50 works immediately after setup. The only consumable part is the carbon filter.
What should I avoid putting inside the FC50?
Leave out bones, soups and liquid-heavy foods, fruit pits and hard seeds (avocado, mango, peach), and anything non-food such as plastics, metals or glass.
How long does the FC50 cycle take?
Cycle time depends on the load. Dry scraps can finish in around five hours; a typical mixed load runs overnight. The FC50 adjusts its drying time automatically and stops on its own once the contents are dry.
What can you put inside the FC50?
You can process fruit scraps, vegetable peels, cooked leftovers, meat and fish (without bones), bread, coffee grounds and eggshells.
Does the FC50 produce compost?
Not quite — the FC50 dries and grinds scraps into PlantMix, which matures in soil for 2–4 weeks before planting. It is not finished compost or a fertiliser.
Does it smell while running?
It is built to keep odours in check — an activated carbon filter absorbs odours through the cycle, and moisture leaves as vapour through that same filter. It is made for everyday indoor use, including apartments.
